I hate to introduce a negative vibe but I was wondering if many riders take breaks on the way up the mountain? It will be my first time and I'm not sure I'm up to the task of a non-stop ride , one reason being my gearing which I can't afford to modify--34 by 36. I know that's plenty low for many but m from what I've read, weaker riders need lower.
Of course, if one does take a break it must be diffcult to get going again without the aid of a friendly push!

Does wheel weight make that much of a difference? I currently have Mavic Ksyrium Elites which weigh in at about 1550 grams. I could spend the money (a lot of money) and get a set of Zipp 202s. But they are tubulars, not clinchers. And the weight savings is only 450 grams. Seems like a lot of cash for what is a relatively small amount of weight. I know saving weight on something that spins, like wheels or pedals, is multiplied. But can it be worth that much?

I'm a middle-aged century rider who goes uphill OK (rides like Colorado's "Triple Bypass", "Assault on Mt. Mitchell" and Wisconsin's "Horrilby Hilly Hundreds"). Training: Lots of miles, a fair amount of hill or interval work, proper recovery periods and eating/sleeping well. Then just remember to hydrate and eat on the (8+ hr) ride. Not very systematic, but it has worked for me.

I would assume training for Mt. Washington is much more about increasing threshhold power for an hour. Like training for a time trial: power intervals that get longer as fitness increases.

I also assume, I'd better get used to maintaining threshhold power at a lower cadence. Hope my knees won't mind!

What do you all do / recommend?

Thanks ahead of time,

The comeradery and music of a class help a lot with motivation.Once you are signed up,and committed, that also is a huge motivator. Let the training begin.
